This
course combines Reading and the Academic Learning
Center to maximize performance in reading and study
skills. Students will spend half of the block reading,
learning effective comprehension strategies, reading
personally selected books, and writing in a
reader/response journal. Students will be exposed to a
wide variety of high interest reading materials with
attention given to individual needs. In the second
half of the block, opportunities for success increase
in the Academic Learning Center with teacher
assistance and peer tutoring assistance in all
academic areas.
Enrollment
is limited.
Note:
While students may elect this class more than
once, students must obtain permission from the course
instructor and the coordinator of the Academic
Learning Center.

COURSES
REQUIRING APPLICATIONS
Students
who wish to seek any of the following course
opportunities must complete an application (please
note - each course has its own individual
application). The course must be listed as an
"Alternate Choice" during registration.
Course numbers are not available to students and will
not appear in the Program of Studies or on scan
sheets.
Once
the student has completed an application and has been
accepted to the course, the opportunity will replace
an elective (see registration sheet).

To
elect the Academic Learning Center Peer Tutor Program
you must meet the following qualifications:
demonstrated academic excellence, and the social and
emotional maturity necessary to connect with students
seeking supportive academic services. As a tutor you
will be assigned to the Academic Learning Centers at
MHS and Qualters Middle School and will be matched
with targeted students in the district who need
supportive help with the specific skills and
strategies needed for content area mastery. As a
member of the Academic Learning Center, you will be
actively participating in a unique educational
experience. The leadership skills you will develop
will provide you with a competitive edge as you
explore post secondary school opportunities. In
addition, you will be making a huge difference in the
lives of those who are seeking help with their
academic program.

to Grade: 12
Students
seeking this tutoring opportunity must complete an
application, which can be obtained from the Academic
Learning Center Coordinator.
A
section of this course may be offered in an alternate
day format to be paired with a course in the
Performing Arts.
