Mansfield High School Business Club Scores Big at DECA District Conference

2010 district team

On Friday January 29, 2010, six Mansfield High School students attended the DECA district conference at the Holiday Inn in Mansfield. Close to 500 students from surrounding schools (King Philip, Franklin, Stoughton, Brockton, Southeastern, Dighton Rehoboth, Taunton, Somerset and Easton) attended the conference. Mansfield, the smallest team at the conference, had two out of the three teams win medals.

Schools attending the conference can compete in a variety of events such as individual events, team events and written events. In both the individual and team events, students have to complete a 100 question test, and then they have to analyze a case study and present their information about the case study to a judge. Written events range from 11 pages to 30 pages in length, the written projects are judged by Johnston and Wales’s faculty and students and then the students have to present their project to a judge during the conference.

Josh Marohn and Amanda Eardley both juniors, competed in the Buying and Merchandising team event. There were close to 20 teams competing in this event. The team of Marohn and Eardley were awarded a third place medal at the conference. The team of Chris Nugent and Shane Roy, both sophomores competed in the Business Law and Ethics team event. This team was awarded a 1st place medal for their outstanding performance. The team of Lei Meli and Mikaela O’Brien competed in the Hospitality event and did an outstanding job in a very competitive event.

The team's that placed in the conference are qualified to attend the state conference in March.

  The Bull Dog Challenge

On November 14, 2009, two teams of four students went to Bryant University in Smithfield, RI for the day to compete in the Bull Dog Challenge.

This business event, hosted by Bryant University, gives students interested in business the opportunity to compete against other high schools. There were 10 high school teams from MA, RI and CT. The event started at 8:30 am with a briefing from one of the professors at Bryant. Teams were then taken into rooms where they were presented with the Harvard Review case study. Students and their Bryant University student adviser (the adviser and Mrs. Foley were only there to facilitate) worked through a grueling analysis of the case for 4 hours. During this time, students had to develop a strategy and a PowerPoint of their strategic recommendation of what the company should do. Students then had to present their recommendations to Bryant Professors and alumni.

One of our teams won the event. This team consisted of 4 juniors from Mansfield High School; Josh Marohn, Amanda Eardley, Megan Cavanaugh and James Parsons. This was an amazing experience.

Students had the opportunity to visit the campus, meet professors, work with Bryant University students and faculty. It was an outstanding event for all students who participated.
