Research image The number of vehicles on our roads is increasing daily. Road congestion has cost billions in lost productivity and wasted fuel and leads to pollution of the environment. For these reasons there is an increasing need to examine alternative forms of transportation.
One solution to this problem may be the development of transport systems which are supported (levitated) by large magnetic forces. This is called magnetic levitation. Magnetic levitation is not a new idea, it has intrigued scientists for years.The technology of magnetic levitation promises extremely fast methods of transportation with simple operation.
You are going to use the Design Loop to help you solve a problem associated with such a system. You are going to look at transportation systems of the present and future. To assist in this process you are going to learn how to control a model of a maglev transport system using a computer.
