The Challenger Sports Program is offered to children who have special needs, who live in Mansfield, and who are between the ages of 3 and 22. It is sponsored by the Special Education Department of the Mansfield Public Schools. The mission of the Challenger Sports Program is to provide exercise, athletics and an opportunity for community-based socialization for children with special needs.

All sessions take place at the Jordan/Jackson School gymnasium on six Thursday nights in the Fall and ten Thursday nights in the Spring.

Younger children (generally ages 3-10) attend the early session beginning at 6:30 P.M. and ending at 7:15 P.M. The session for older students (generally ages 11-22) begins at 7:15 P.M. and ends at 8:00 P.M.

Both sessions involve warm up exercises, skills practice and age appropriate games. Soccer is a focused activity for the Fall session. Basketball and Wiffleball are focused activities for the Spring session. However, program flexibility insures that each child participates in activities regardless of his or her age or ability.

Challengers is staffed by an occupational therapist who oversees the adaptive physical education aspects of the program. Also, the occupational therapist supports those participants with sensory integration needs.

The Challengers staff also includes a special education professional who focuses on communication and behavioral strategies, often in conjunction with the participant’s classroom teacher as she has direct contact with many of the professional staff in the district during the school day.

In addition to our education professionals, Challengers is fortunate to be supported by many wonderful teenage volunteers who provide social experiences that are beneficial to everyone and who offer as much assistance as each child needs.

Parental involvement is always important. A parent, guardian or other caregiver is asked to be present during each session to offer information about the participant to staff and volunteers, as necessary. And, the Challenger Sports Program is a great opportunity to network with other parents!

The Challenger Sports Program encourages sibling attendance. Sisters and brothers of all ages enjoy a great time at the sports program for their family member with special needs. Our teenage volunteers make sure that everyone has fun!

Parents or guardians are welcome to attend a session with or without their child to observe the program free of charge. Also, the Challenger Sports Program maintains an open registration policy. Your child can begin to attend at any of the program’s sessions.
